A Legacy For The Lord

I once met a godly woman who was speaking at a weekend retreat and, after spending some time in her company, I found myself praying specifically, “Lord, whatever that woman has, I would like it”. When the Lord places people in our lives who are godly, authentic and live out their life and ministry with integrity in plain sight, you can’t help but be impacted and challenged by their example.

Joshua was Moses’ aid from his youth (Numbers 11:28) and we are first introduced to him at the battle with the Amalekites (Exodus 17:9) where he led the forces of Israel to victory under the overall leadership of his mentor Moses. Because of Joshua’s position, he was able to accompany Moses partway up Mount Sinai when the Ten Commandments were given and also aided him at the tent of meeting (Exodus 24:13-14, & 33:11).

Joshua was one of the spies chosen to view the land of Canaan and, along with Caleb, gave an encouraging report on the land, resulting in the two of them being permitted to enter the Promised Land, while all the other adults of their generation died in the wilderness (Numbers 13:8,16, & 14:6-30).

Joshua was a man of faith, spiritually minded, courageous, obedient, and he walked in the fear of the Lord, just like his mentor Moses. He was divinely appointed and ordained by God as successor of Moses (Numbers 27:18-23) and led the people of Israel into the promised land, remaining faithful to God throughout his life. His steadfast example was a powerful legacy to the people, just as Moses’ example had been to him.

The woman that I met so long ago is now one of my most trusted and cherished friends. She is still a mentor to me in so many ways and continues to be an example of godly womanhood, humility, integrity and faithfulness to God, as she lives out her life, marriage and ministry. Simply put, she had always generously shared her relationship with God with me!

I now often pray and invite the Lord to use me in this same way, asking Him to allow me opportunities to disciple and mentor the ones He places in my path.

If you have a godly mentor, today may be a wonderful day to let them know how they have impacted your life. If you don’t, then can I encourage you to ask the Lord to send someone. And if you are like my godly friend and have spent years mentoring and giving of yourself to the body of Christ, I would l like to say, “Thank you so very much from the bottom of my heart!”

Prayer: Father, thank You for Your word, which breathes life and light into my life. Thank You for the people that You have used over the years to mentor, teach and disciple me in Your ways. I always want to remain teachable so that I can remain faithful to You and leave a godly legacy. I am never too old to be mentored and, even if I am young, I can share my relationship with You with someone. Lead me, I pray, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
