Whom Do We Depend On?

While my husband and I were reading 2 Kings 18 in our daily reading plan, I was struck by the above verse. Sennacherib, the king of Assyria, is threatening Hezekiah and challenging him about his dependence on God, ‘On what are you basing this confidence of yours?’ (2 Kings 18:19).

It made me think about whom I trust and what do I base my confidence on in this troubled time. We are being given lots of sound and sensible advice which we are following, but when “the rubber hits the road”, in what or in whom are we placing our confidence? Are we basing our faith on the advice of governments, medics or some other alternative?

I was praying in the dark hours of the night, when anxieties loom large, and I felt God saying, “Be still and know that I am God”. He who created the earth and made each one of us knows the design plan of our being. He knows and is not surprised by all the evil, all the illness in the world. The challenge is do we trust that He will be with us in the storm and even rescue or heal our land?

It isn’t easy in these times of fear and anxiety but God, our Father, Jesus, our brother, and Holy Spirit, our comforter, are with us and will help us in our struggles.

Prayer: Almighty Father God, we choose to lean on You and not on a splintered staff that will hurt and wound us. You are our rock. Help us to do what is right and follow the good advice, but we acknowledge You are the one who saves and heals. Come with power and heal our land, Amen.

Scripture

Look, I know you are depending on Egypt, that splintered reed of a staff, which pierces the hand of anyone who leans on it! Such is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who depend on him.
2 Kings 18:21, NIV
