Horses

I enjoy watching documentaries on television. Wide open spaces and the beauty of nature is always a pleasure to watch. One day I was watching a documentary about wild horses in America. They are beautiful creatures, muscles rippling as they run, free to roam the wide, open spaces.

But there was also a story about a poor farmer who used his horse to work very hard in the field. I thought about the two types of horse. The one beautiful, strong, free to run, and the other horse working in the field every day, not free at all, limited to a small area for his whole life. One of the two horses benefits mankind, it’s the horse, sentenced to a life of hard work, rather than the good looking, free agent who does what he wants to do.

Some horses are truly in the limelight – their owners are well known, and they win many important races. The horse and the owner get many accolades from the public at large. Much prize money is the order of the day. Then we turn our attention to the hard-working farm horse. Every day it’s out in the fields. Not a day goes by without some benefit to the farmer. The produce will benefit the local food market. The farm horse won’t be known by others, except to the farmer, but he’s very valuable to the greater community.

I feel that the average Christian worker, can be likened to the farm horse. Working day after day in the vineyard of the Lord, sometimes tired, not noticed, not famous, but producing heavenly sustenance for starving people. In the end, the Lord will assess what we’ve done to bring glory to His name. Have we been in the limelight but produced little for others to benefit from? Or, have we served faithfully day in and day out leaving the result in His hands.

Prayer: Lord, I see the need for people to hear the good news of the Gospel. Help me to use whatever talents I have to reach others for You. Let me not grow weary in doing so. Amen.
