See To It That No-one Takes You Captive

There are two key concepts foundational to the beliefs of secular humanism: freedom and equality. Countless placards, on marches throughout the world, daily proclaim these words, demanding the rights of groups experiencing some form of real, or perceived, oppression.

Who can deny that the pursuit of freedom and equality is a very reasonable aspiration for every right-thinking person? However, unless such ideologies are anchored in a clear and unchangeable code of morality, the words are, in fact, indefinable and meaningless.

The truth is that, in modern humanism, there is no moral anchoring. It is a life-stance based on the ever-changing reasoning and opinion of man. One person’s definition and demand for freedom will be different from that of another, whereas the word of God is unchanging and clear. God's view of freedom is quite simply the absence of spiritual bondage through the resolving of sinfulness.

Today there are many aggressive voices demanding equality in areas such as gender, marriage, religion, sexual expression, status and justice. Egalité was one of three keywords of the French Revolution, but the tens of thousands of people guillotined didn’t experience much equality of justice, when compared with the revolutionaries. Why? Because the moral anchor of the word of God had been abandoned, in pursuit of an attractive-sounding, perhaps well-meaning, but hollow, human philosophy.

Prayer: Father, keep us alert to those spiritually defiling ideologies that depend only on the wisdom of man rather than the wisdom of God, however attractive they might appear. Amen.

"See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow or deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of the world rather than on Christ."
Colossians 2:8, NIV
