The Kiss

Once, a long time ago, I was standing in the bakers shop, with a sad broken heart, wondering how to go on, when I felt a gentle kiss on my neck. I looked round and saw it was the Pastors’ wife, standing behind me. I felt as if it was from the Lord for there was such love in that gentle kiss. He had put it into her heart to do this.

When a little child has banged himself, more than a bandage or plaster, he want to be

held and kissed better, then his spirit and emotions are healed and the hurt is often taken care of. (I know that in this climate of political correctness, touch is often not permitted, but there come times when we know a touch of love is needed because we are human, and it is right at that time). Sometimes we need God to kiss us better when we are hurting.

There is the kiss of reconciliation which we receive at Calvary where God’s justice truth and righteousness met with his grace, mercy and love. Psalm 85.10. ‘Mercy and truth have met together. Grim justice and and peace have kissed!’ Also there is the kiss of the Father as he ran to meet the prodigal son and fell on his neck and kissed him. Luke 15.11.

For his love is better than wine – we are told not to be drunk with wine, but to be filled with the Spirit. There are times when the Lord draws very near to us and we become extremely aware of his presence. This is like the kiss of reassurance in relationship, when we know and experience his love in the Holy Spirit.

We can return the kiss. Psalm 2.12. Fall down before the Son and kiss his feet. In the Living Bible translation, it says, ‘But Oh the joy of those who put their trust in him’.

Like Mary, who broke the ointment over the feet of Jesus and wiped them with her hair, continually kissing his feet, she was giving him the kiss of gratefulness and love.

(Luke 7. 37- 38.) We can’t do this, but we can kiss him in worship and show him our gratitude in what we say and do to others.

Prayer: Lord, may we be able to receive the kiss from you that we need and help us to give you the kiss of gratefulness for all that you have poured out for us. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
